Alan Rosenspan Accepts Gavel as New NEDMA Board Takes Office!NEDMA and the New England direct marketing community are very fortunate! We have people with considerable direct marketing expertise who are also willing to give of their time to help make NEDMA the organization people rely on for DM knowledge, news, and networking.
The passing of the gavel took place at the June 11th NEDMA breakfast meeting. This year, for the first time, the Board has four secretary positions and each Board member has specific areas of responsibility. Alan Rosenspan of Alan Rosenspan & Associates is the new President and Board Chair of the Butterworth Committee. Alex MacAaron, EVP, COO, Direct Results Group/SourceLink is Vice President and Conference Chair. Tom Tringale, Director of Design and Innovation, Epsilon, is Treasurer and Chair of the Awards Committee. The four new secretaries are Dennis Driscoll, President of Sylogy Partners, who has primary responsibility for the Public Relations Committee, Cynthia Bro Higgins, Owner of ResponsiveConcepts Advertising and Website Design, who is our Webmaster and heads the Interactive Committee, Laurel Rossi, EVP, CIO, Hill, Holliday Relationship Marketing, who is Board Chair of the Corporate Membership/Sponsorship Committee, and Pam Sullivan, President/Creative Director of Sullivan Creative who is Board Chair of the Membership and Hospitality Committees. Immediate Past President, Nancy Harhut, SVP/CD, Mullen, is Board Chair of the Program Committee. This promises to be another very exciting year!

Bob Clarkson presents the Watson Bowl to Nancy Harhut. |
Now Watson is part of Fidelity Communications, and this year the tradition continued as Fidelity VP Bob Clarkson presented Nancy Harhut with this prestigious Award.
In his opening remarks, Bob said: "Nancy pulled the organization together after 9-11, held a couple of town meetings, and successfully addressed the anthrax scare with the NEDMA membership."
He also discussed NEDMA's progress during Nancy's presidency. "It was an outstanding year," he continued. "The speakers at the monthly meetings were of exceptionally high quality, networking events were lively and fun, the conference brought in keynoters, speakers, and seminar leaders from all over the country, and many firms have become new NEDMA members--taking advantage of the three levels of corporate membership."
You and the Board gave us a wonderful year. We thank you for your terrific ideas, dedication, knowledge, and the kind words you sent to those who worked with you.

The NEDMA Service Award is given to NEDMA members in recognition of their superior volunteer efforts.

No, you don't have to go to any foreign country! For this "tour of duty," you'll get to network, have fun, and do a little volunteer work...all at the same time.
NEDMA has a number of committees, such as the Conference Committee, that need help. Volunteering is a wonderful way to "give back" to an industry that's been good to you. It's also a great way to make new contacts, get involved with NEDMA, hone your skills, and maybe even gain new skills.
You can find out more by attending our September 12, 2002, Networking Reception and Volunteer Fair from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel in Waltham. If you can't make the meeting, but are interested in volunteering, please email: Alan Rosenspan, , or call the NEDMA office, 781-237-1366.

The use of permission-based email and newsletter marketing is proliferating rapidly--often with click-throughs in excess of 15%. Here's a simple idea guaranteed to even further boost click-throughs, readership, and retention--ask your customers and prospects what they want to know...and they'll tell you!
Mechanically, this can be accomplished simply, elegantly, and cost-effectively by directing customers and prospects to fill out and submit their preferences on your website.
At its most basic level, email software allows customers to select what they'd like to receive based on a pre-published list of content. More advanced techniques include the ability to tie customer self-generated preferences to SFA and CRM systems to drive even more personalized event and/or data-driven content.
For example, one financial services firm provides newsletters tied to customers' portfolios--offering sector news, research, and analysis specific to individual holdings and watch lists. The firm is presently configuring their online self-service center to allow customers to opt-in for content based on life events (i.e., with basic demographic information, software automates sending college savings program info as new children are born, etc.).
With Britemoon's upcoming Release 4.0, creating enhanced data-driven online campaigns integrated with CRM systems will become even easier-- enabling marketing users to quickly and intuitively create complex, conditional rules to drive more personalized content tailored to customers' preferences.

The 23rd Annual Paul Butterworth Copywriting Seminar was free to members and only $10/$25 for others in honor of the late Paul Butterworth's commitment to education...but the ideas and information that the attendees received were worth hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars.
Tom Gaffny, SVP of the Creative Group of Epsilon, explained why the opening sentence for DM campaigns is critical and that a writer has only a few seconds to capture his reader's attention.
Sherri Mayer, Independent Copywriter and Consultant, discussed the do's and don't of web site copywriting and gave tips on how to make people "sticky" longer.
Mary Hutchinson, Sr. Partner at Newport Creative Communications, used movie clips to show there are many ways to get the information you need to write persuasive copy.
And George Wojtkiewicz, President of GHW Associates, told attendees how they can learn to write good copy, how to judge good copy, and how you should tackle a copy assignment.
And no matter what you say, you should spell it correctly. So THANKS to Phil Jamieson, President, for ProofreadNOW's (www.proofreadNOW.com) sponsorship of this event.
Butterworth was on June 18. Just one week earlier on June 11, Bari Harlam, CVS Relationship Marketing Director, shared the secrets of CVS's phenomenal ExtraCare" customer loyalty program. Launched in March 2001, they now have 29,000,000 (yes, that many zeros is correct!) card holders. She explained what CVS does to motivate customers and described the types of programs that increase store traffic.
The upcoming programs promise to be just as good--guaranteed! Don't miss out. See below for more details.

Our members asked for it--and now it is here...almost. Going live in early September, NEDMA's website nedma.com will have a Job Bank. Member and non-member companies can post job openings to the website; however, they must be direct-marketing related.
Job listings can be up to 350 words and should include: date the listing was submitted; company name; location of position; position title; position type (full time, part time, contract, freelance); date position begins; Requirements of applicants credentials; responsibilities of position; company description; benefits; contact name; and contact email (address and fax also good, but not required). Please email your listings to Cynthia Bro Higgins at
Access to these job listings will be a member-only benefit. Complete details will be available on the website real soon--it's "Under Construction" as the web lingo goes.
Cynthia says she is looking for volunteers to help her run the job bank. Interested? Email her at the address above.

The direct marketing industry and NEDMA has lost a friend and colleague. James A. Skogseth, President of Bay State Envelope died suddenly on June 6. He founded the Mansfield, MA-based firm 15 years ago with Russ Frizzell, EVP of Sales, and helped build it into a $12 million dollar business with 32 employees. He was exceptionally knowledgeable about the envelope business and an active supporter of NEDMA. He will be missed.
Blue Hill Press has a new owner. Paul Lauenstein and Lonnie Friedman, who owned the Canton-based firm for 16 years, have sold it to Daniel Bauman of Stoughton. Dan has many years of experience in the printing industry as plant manager and general manager at Quebecor, Courier, and Pilgrim Badge & Label. As EVP, Paul will concentrate his efforts on sales and customer relations, while Lonnie will remain as Office Manager and Bookkeeper. The firm specializes in high-quality, short-to-medium-run, sheet-fed commercial printing.
Joe Grimaldi, CEO of Mullen has chosen Jeffrey S. Winsper as Executive Vice President, Director of B2B Business Practice for the Wenham-headquartered firm. Jeff will oversee all development efforts with an emphasis on B2B growth sectors including life sciences, healthcare, biotech, manufacturing and high-tech. He was most recently president of Leo Burnett Technology Group/Boston.
